January/February 2007

Happy New Year!

Welcome to a brand new year!  I hope that 2007 brings many healthy and happy days for you and yours.

Let me take this time to encourage you to participate in the upcoming Heartland events.  From tracking to drafting to conformation to socializing, we have it all!

There are new and exciting days ahead…there is so much to do in the next few months with your Berner.  Keep in touch with the Berner Briefs, and I hope that we see you very soon!

-        Your President

Dues are Due Soon!

Annual HBMDC dues are due very soon, so please submit your membership renewals.  These funds help us to keep the integral parts of this club functioning.

Dues notices will be sent by email very soon by our membership chair, Penny Pollock-Barnes.  In addition to the individual reminders, we have attached a dues renewal reminder at the end of this issue of the Berner Briefs.

Annual Awards

That’s right!  It is that time of year again – time to honor your Berner buddy with the recognition that he or she deserves.

If your Berner earned a title in 2006, please read the Awards Application form at the end of this issue of the Berner Briefs.

Draft Test!!

Great news!  The Heartland Bernese Mountain Dog Club has received official BMDCA approval to host our annual back-to-back draft tests in 2007!

The test dates will be on Memorial Day weekend, Saturday May 26 and Sunday May 27.

The draft tests will be held at the same site as last year – Chichaqua Bottoms Greenbelt in Maxwell, Iowa.  The park is a wonderful dog-friendly area with lots to offer – trails, pond, river, playgrounds, camping, and a building with full amenities.

We have two wonderful draft test judges who will be officiating at this year’s draft tests, Peggy Granger from Wisconsin and Valerie Horney from Colorado.  We are very excited and lucky to have them!

Plan to attend the draft tests and witness our glorious Berners in their natural capacity – pulling a draft cart.  Plan also to attend the general club meeting to be held on Saturday, May 26 at the conclusion of the day’s test.

We can always use more volunteers to assist with the test!  Volunteering to be a draft steward is a great way to learn more about draft tests and the inner-workings of the working relationship between handler and dog.

You can find more information on the draft test on the Heartland Club’s website very soon at www.HBMDC.org,

You can contact the Draft Test Chairperson, Jessica Briggle at DreamfieldsBMD@msn.com or 515-984-6798, or the Draft Test Secretary, Kathy Berge at KathyDVM@aol.com or 515-262-8535 for more information, or to request a copy of the premium list.

Mark Your Calendar!

The Bernese Mountain Dog Club of Southeastern Wisconsin is hosting its 7th and 8th annual back-to-back regional specialties in Franklin, Wisconsin.  The dates for the shows are Friday, March 2nd and Saturday, March 3rd,.

This has historically been a great set of shows to attend.  This year promises to be no different.  The show hosts conformation, obedience and rally on both days, with puppy and veteran sweepstakes on Saturday.

The BMDCSEW has three esteemed breeder-judges judging conformation events.  Mrs. Lisa Ebnet and Ms. Sara Karl are judging breed on Friday and Saturday, respectively.  Ms. Missy Wright will be judging sweepstakes on Saturday.

This is a great opportunity to learn more about the breed, catch up with old friends and meet new ones.

You can find more information, including information on the host hotel and premium list on the BMDCSEW website at www.bmdcsew.org, or you can contact the show secretary, Mark Milligan at bonmead@netnet.net or (920) 822-8174.

The National Specialty is coming…gear up to “Show for the Roses!”

The Bernese Mountain Dog Club of America is holding its annual national specialty in Louisville, Kentucky this year.  The show dates are May 7 through May 12, 2007.

The national specialty plays host to a wide variety of undertakings, including  tracking, drafting, conformation, obedience, agility and herding, just to name a few.

The national specialty is a fantastic opportunity to witness the Berner in every venue they are capable of performing in.

The week also provides an in-depth study on the breed through such things as Berner University and keynote speakers.  There will be health clinics available for Berners in attendance – you can have your dog CERF’d, have his heart screened and certified via a cardiologist, you can submit DNA for von Willebrand’s screening, etc.

And the shopping…my goodness the shopping….

ALL in the superb Louisville, Kentucky, home of the longest-running sporting event in America’s history – the famous Kentucky Derby!  Perhaps you would like to come a day early and watch the famous race in person???

You can find more information about the show at http://www.bmdca.org/specialty/2007/index.php, including a current Planning Booklet that describes each and every event available for the attendee to take part in or watch.  You will also find two fliers at the end of this edition of the Berner Briefs regarding Berner University and herding events at the national.

So, consider joining the HBMDC membership contingent at the national this year – you won’t be disappointed!

***Please remember that BMDCA rules require that ALL Berners entered in events where titles can be earned MUST have a DNA ID on file with the American Kennel Club.  More specific information on this requirement can be found on the specialty website***

Upcoming Dog events

There is a conformation handling seminar coming up soon.  The George Alston Handling Seminar will be held on March 24 and March 25, 2007 at the Westinn Kennels, Everything Under One Woof, 1522 Swantnerville Drive, Wentzville, MO.

The application and brochure are on the Jefferson County Kennel Club of Missouri at www.jckc.org

The cost is $150 for handler with a dog and $75 for an observer.

There are 20 slots for beginners and 20 for advanced beginners.  Observers are unlimited.

There is also a canine reproduction seminar on August 11 and August 12, 2007.  Dr. Robert Hutchinson will be presenting “Canine Reproduction and Neonatal Puppy Care” at the Belle City Kennel Club building at 2448 Eastview Drive, Belleville, IL (just east across the river from St. Louis, MO).

Cost is $160 for both days.  Seminars will run from 8 am – 4 pm.  Information can be found on the kennel club website at www.bellecitykc.org

Looking to Spend Some Hard-Earned Money??

Look no further than the Heartland Club’s own Ways and Means!  Our own hard-working Ways and Means Chair, Shari Cannon-Mackey, has a TON of Berner offerings for those of you dying to own a very stylish Berner sweatshirt or t-shirt, or just about anything else that your heart may desire.  The great items found within our Ways and Means catalog would make terrific presents for that favorite Berner lover you know!  Please contact Shari at scannonmackey@landrum-brown.com for more information!

Upcoming Meetings

The next general club membership meeting will be held in conjunction with the annual draft test in Maxwell, Iowa.  Maxwell is approximately 20 minutes north of Des Moines.

The general club membership meeting will be held following the conclusion of the test on Saturday, May 26th.

Please plan to attend and partake in the goings-on of the club.  Come prepared with ideas and comments.  Our desire is to serve the entire membership, but we can’t do that well unless we have your attendance and input!  So, bring your thinking caps AND your dogs.

Rescue Information

The HBMDC is seeing more and more Berners in rescue.  Please contact Julie Hessenflow at JHessenflow@sbcglobal.net for more information on available Berners or to offer some much-needed assistance.
